May 22, 1992 I’ve been away four years. A college lifetime. Heading back to meet up with my high school buddies, I wonder how I got to twenty-two with them still in my life. I wonder if they even are. Does today count? Initial nostalgia aside, do we know each other? Do they think they know me? Did they ever really know me? Things have changed. “The guys hanging out, like old times,” they said. What’s the worst that could happen? POCKET MONEY. Pocket Money tells the tale of a day in the life of four friends who revel in their shared histories as they come to terms with where they are now, how they got there, and where they’re going. The psychological threads of each character unspools as they weave and tangle while life changing secrets are revealed during a day of memories…and murder.

Pocket Money M F Lamphere Books

I loved this book. I the night after I finished it, I sat down to read it out of habit and was quite disappointed when I realized I'd finished it the night before! It's been about a month since I finished the book and I still find myself thinking about it and talking about it. I loved the pace of the book and the storytelling. I finished it in just a few short evenings.
The story takes place in one day. It's one day that four friends return home after college and meet-up. There is so much that you can relate to, yet so many surprises. Each character is their own person, with a VERY well developed personality. The author did such a great job with making you feel like you knew each character in such a short period of time. I also love the darkness and mystery surrounding this book. Although the narrator is well-developed, you never find out who he is. This is a unique, yet interesting way to tell a story because it allows the reader to add in a lot of their own opinions and thoughts.
I highly recommend taking the time to read this book, putting it down will be a challenge and not thinking about it will be impossible!

Pocket Money M F Lamphere Books Reviews

I received this ebook in exchange for an honest review. All comments are my own. This was a different kind of book for me. It's a combo of thriller and drama, and crime, all mixed together. The story takes place within a 24 hour period. The chapters are separated into timeframes. Things happen continuously minute by minute. What results in a group of college age guys reuniting after several years turns out more than what each expected. Time does change people. The author nails the young-male POV perfectly. I felt like a fly on the wall during their conversations and adventures. There is language, bad attitude, and did I mention murder. I won't say anymore, but that I enjoyed the story.
I read this in one sitting.Based on that I give it a 5 star rating The plot(non plot?) Was engaging from the start. The characters were real from the start. The editing was nearly flawless, and as an antique fan of the classic mystery genre (Phillip Marlowe et al) I had totally (and smugly) wrongly predicted the end of the story. I first purchased this electronically, but have just received it in print and plan on reading it in the mountains, or at the shore w/o distractions. If my first impression was wrong, I will let you know.Until then, my 5 star rating stands.
"Pocket Money" is a mix between Stephen King's novella "The Body" (movie "Stand By Me") and the "Final Destination" series of movies. Four young men all get together for the first time in four years to reminisce about old times. It doesn't take too much time before harmless childhood remembrances turn into a psychotically twisted contest where one person wins and everybody loses. At first, we don't learn everything about each of the characters M.L. Lamphere creates, but we learn just enough for us to understand why they do what they do later on.

Lamphere's literary style is interesting and masterful. The narrator, who is one fourth of the demented quartet, is never named. This literary device was applied so effortlessly, I didn't realize it until the end of the novel; I loved that!

The one frustrating aspect of the book was its (over)use of various anachronistic references. For example, on several occasions, Lamphere's characters draw quotes from the children's program "Pee Wee Herman's Playhouse." The problem is, Lamphere's characters were born around 1970, and PWP ran from 1986-1990. It's unlikely the foursome would be watching Pee Wee between the ages of 16 and 20, and even had they done so, Pee Wee would be too uncool to quote at age 22.

Nevertheless, Lamphere's ability to spellbind the reader wholly trumps those minor annoyances. Author! Author! Can't wait for book #2!
I enjoyed Pocket Money. It was not quite what I'd expected. I thought it was a mystery or a murder suspense. Some sort of darker version of Clue, where you know all the characters but not who's doing the killing. That is NOT what this is. It is more about the interrelations of four friends and the psychology of them as individuals and as a group. But it's not presented as that. That's what I got out of it after mulling over the ending. It's presented as a single day's journey of four old friends.

I would say that if you enjoy dark, disturbing, thought provoking reads, you'll enjoy Pocket Money. Don't look to find out what the story is before you read it or you'll ruin it for yourself. This is one that knowing even a single sentence synopsis can ruin the read. So don't hunt for a synopsis. Just read it.

I want to add that the beginning is a little slow as the main character returns to the home town, but later that slow time spent with that character feels necessary to really understand him. So even though that intro takes a minute, stick with it and you'll get the reward of it. Once he gets to the friends everything picks up and it moves at a very good pace.

I feel that with the increase in self-published and digital books, reviews benefit from a note about formatting, typos, and the writing in general. Pocket Money is well written. If there were typos or such, they were few and far between and I didn't notice them detract from the reading. I did find myself rereading a few descriptions, not because they were difficult but because I enjoyed them. I would read more from this author.
Pocket Money is a story of four buddies who reunite after a few college years apart. Their day of reminiscing takes a drastic turn for the worse, when the deal of the day becomes murder. They each have to prove their worthiness by offing someone for their pocket money. The four buddies learn more about each other in that one day, then they ever knew in their lifetime of friendship. The author nailed the male POV flawlessly, four times. While sometimes graphic and peppered with profanity, the dialogue is clever, fresh and pithy. This book is a fast-paced read that sucks you into the drama from the start.
